The transition to a clean energy system is a once in a lifetime opportunity to build the economic growth engine of the future – to lower bills, support good jobs, and boost energy security. A whole system approach is needed: considering the renewables needed to generate power, the infrastructure to distribute it, right through to the homes and industries where people use energy in their day-to-day lives.
The new Labour government in the UK has been elected with a mandate for climate action. Voters will look to the new government to address the cost-of-living crisis, which was driven by a spike in fossil gas prices.
The 2030 clean power mission can help decarbonise the power system. Coupled with a successful drive to retrofit the UK’s leaky and polluting homes, the government can not just bring down bills, but also reduce the country’s reliance on energy imports.
By supporting British industries to upgrade, the new government can support prosperity across the country. The commitment to phase out oil and gas is welcome, and now needs to be accompanied by supportive measures for communities and workers.
The new government and new MPs’ actions in the crucial areas of power, buildings, industry, and oil and gas can help accelerate this transition to clean energy and provide a boost to the UK economy. E3G sets out our high-level priorities for the energy transition in this short briefing.
